Your domain may be managed through someone else’s QHost account, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they own it. Here’s how to understand and protect your .qa domain ownership.
When registering a .qa domain name, two different parties may be involved: the registered domain holder (registrant) and the person or company controlling the QHost customer account where the domain is managed.
These are not necessarily the same person, and understanding the difference is essential for protecting your business and online identity.
1. Who Owns a .qa Domain? The Registrant #
The registrant is the individual or organization officially recorded as the domain holder in the Qatar Domains Registry (QDR), operated by the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA). The official WHOIS portal serves as the database of the legal owner of the domain name, it can be access here: https://whois.registry.qa/
The registrant holds the registration rights to the domain, subject to the applicable registry policies and registration agreement.
For example, if mybusiness.qa is registered under My Business LLC, that company is the registered domain holder, even if a web designer or IT agency manages the domain on its behalf.
The registrant is the party whose authorization and eligibility are relevant to ownership-related changes, transfers and other protected registration operations.
Important: Having paid for a domain does not automatically establish that you are its registered holder. The information recorded with the registry is critical.
2. Who Manages the Domain? The QHost Account Holder #
The account holder is the person or company controlling the QHost customer account where the domain is managed.
Depending on their account permissions and applicable verification requirements, they may be able to:
- Renew the domain and pay invoices.
- Update nameservers and DNS settings.
- Manage associated hosting and email services.
- Receive domain notifications and renewal reminders.
- Submit domain-related support requests.
However, control of a QHost customer account does not automatically establish ownership of the domain registered within it.
A domain may be managed by an employee, web developer, IT consultant or reseller while its registered holder remains another individual or company.
3. Why Does This Difference Matter? #
Consider a common situation:
A business hires a web design agency to register a .qa domain and develop its website.
The agency registers the domain through its own QHost account.
There are two possible outcomes:
Scenario A: The domain is registered in the business’s name.
The business is the recorded registrant, while the agency manages the domain on its behalf. The agency’s account control does not, by itself, make it the registered holder.
Scenario B: The domain is registered in the agency’s name.
The agency is recorded as the registrant, even if the business paid for the domain and uses it for its website and email.
This can create serious complications if the business relationship ends or the agency becomes unresponsive.
Our recommendation: Always ensure business domain names are registered under the correct legal entity, with accurate contact details and an email address controlled by the business.
4. How Can I Check Who Is Registered as the Domain Holder? #
If your domain is managed through QHost:
- Log in to your QHost customer account.
- Open the Domain Management section.
- Select the relevant
.qadomain. - Review the registrant and contact information available for the registration.
- Check that the registered name, organization and contact details are correct.
If your domain is managed by a third-party provider and you cannot access these details, ask the provider to confirm the registered holder information.
You can also contact QHost support from your registered customer account for assistance, subject to the applicable account verification and privacy requirements.
Remember: Public WHOIS information may not display every registrant detail. The authoritative registration information is maintained within the registry system.
5. Can the Account Holder Transfer Ownership of My Domain? #
Not simply because they have access to the customer account.
Changes to the registered domain holder must comply with the applicable Qatar Domains Registry policies, authorization procedures and eligibility requirements.
Under the updated policies effective 22 October 2026, changes to existing .qa registrations may require supporting documents, including a Qatar ID, Commercial Registration, residency permit or qualifying trademark certificate.
The revised policies also introduce restrictions on selling, renting or leasing second-level .qa domain names.
Accordingly, a request to change the registrant is not merely an account administration task. It must meet the applicable registry requirements.
6. What If My Domain Is in My Web Developer’s or Agency’s QHost Account? #
This arrangement is not necessarily a problem, provided the domain is registered under the correct holder and the agency is authorized to manage it.
However, we recommend that businesses:
- Confirm the official registrant information.
- Maintain control over the registrant’s authorized email address.
- Keep copies of relevant registration records and invoices.
- Establish written agreements with agencies managing important digital assets.
- Ensure that access and management responsibilities are clearly documented.
Where appropriate, customers may request changes to their management arrangements, subject to account verification, registrant authorization and applicable registry rules.
7. What Happens If Two Parties Claim Ownership of the Same Domain? #
QHost is a domain registrar and service provider, not an arbitrator of competing domain ownership claims.
If two parties dispute the rights to a domain, QHost cannot independently decide ownership based solely on invoices, screenshots, website content, account access or competing statements.
The domain’s registered holder information, applicable registry policies, relevant contractual evidence and any legally binding decisions must be considered through the appropriate procedures.
Depending on the nature of the disagreement, the parties may need to resolve it through:
- Mutual agreement and appropriate authorization.
- The applicable Qatar Domains Registry dispute resolution procedures, where relevant.
- The competent courts or other legally authorized authorities.
QHost will act in accordance with applicable registry policies, valid legal instructions and its contractual obligations.
Payment history or access to the QHost account alone does not necessarily resolve an ownership dispute.
8. Can I Move My Domain to Another QHost Account? #
A change to the customer account responsible for managing a domain is different from changing the registered domain holder.
Such requests are subject to QHost’s account verification, authorization and security procedures.
Where the registered holder remains unchanged, an account management change does not necessarily constitute a change of domain ownership.
Please contact QHost support for assistance with the relevant procedure.
Protect Your .qa Domain Ownership #
Your domain name is an important part of your business identity. Losing access to it can affect your website, email communications and customer trust.
The most important thing to remember: The registrant recorded with the Qatar Domains Registry holds the registration rights, while the QHost account holder manages the domain and associated services. These may be different parties.
Make sure your domain is registered under the correct person or company, that your contact details remain accurate and that anyone managing your domain is properly authorized.
