Answers to the most important questions about existing .qa registrations, renewals, eligibility documents, DNS changes, transfers and the new Qatar Domains Registry policies.

Updated: 21 October 2026 | QHost Technologies

The Qatar Domains Registry (QDR), operated by the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA), is introducing new domain registration and management policies effective 22 October 2026.

The changes introduce eligibility requirements for .qa domains, new transfer and renewal procedures, and important rules concerning modifications to existing registrations.

Following CRA’s clarification issued on 21 October 2026, we have updated this FAQ to explain how the new requirements affect customers who already own Qatar domain names.

1. Will My Existing .qa Domain Be Cancelled on 22 October?

No, not automatically.

CRA has confirmed that existing registrations will continue under the new registry platform’s automatic renewal functionality.

The introduction of new eligibility requirements does not, by itself, cancel every existing domain.

However, existing registrations remain subject to the updated policies, particularly when changes are requested.

If an eligibility check is required and the registrant fails to satisfy the requirements, the registrar must delete the domain in accordance with CRA’s clarification.

2. I Live Outside Qatar. Can I Keep My Existing .qa Domain?

Existing registrations held by international customers are not automatically cancelled solely because the registrant resides outside Qatar.

However, the updated policies introduce eligibility requirements that may affect future transactions involving your domain.

If you request modifications to the domain registration, including applicable DNS updates, eligibility verification must be completed first.

If you do not qualify under the applicable eligibility category, CRA has instructed registrars to delete the domain.

International registrants should therefore review their eligibility before requesting changes.

3. Can I Still Renew My Existing .qa Domain?

Yes. CRA has confirmed that existing domains will continue through the new registry’s automatic renewal process.

However, registry-level automatic renewal does not mean renewals are free.

Customers must continue paying their domain renewal invoices according to the applicable payment deadlines and terms.

An automatic renewal also does not exempt the registrant from eligibility requirements when changes are requested.

4. Do I Need to Submit a QID or Commercial Registration Immediately?

Not necessarily.

Existing domain owners are not required to submit a completely new registration application solely because the new registry platform is being introduced.

However, eligibility verification is required before processing modifications to registration details.

Depending on the registrant’s category, the necessary documentation may include:

  • Qatar ID (QID).
  • Residency permit.
  • Commercial Registration (CR).
  • Trade licence.
  • Qualifying trademark registration.
  • Other relevant official evidence.

QHost may also request documentation as part of its compliance procedures.

5. What Happens If I Cannot Meet the New Eligibility Requirements?

This is one of the most important changes for existing domain holders.

CRA has clarified that when eligibility verification is required for an existing domain modification and the registrant does not meet the applicable requirements, the registrar must delete the domain.

The deleted domain will enter the 30-day Redemption Period.

During redemption, the domain may stop resolving, affecting associated websites, email and other services.

If you are uncertain about your eligibility, please contact QHost before requesting changes to your registration.

6. Can I Change My Domain’s Nameservers After 22 October?

Nameserver changes require updating the domain’s delegation information at the registry.

CRA has confirmed that eligibility verification must be completed before processing changes to existing registration details, including DNS updates.

You may therefore need to provide documents establishing eligibility before a nameserver change can proceed.

If eligibility cannot be established, the registry’s mandatory deletion requirement may apply.

7. What Is the Difference Between Changing Nameservers and Editing DNS Records?

These are different technical operations.

Nameserver changes: Updating the authoritative nameservers listed for your domain requires a registry-level transaction.

DNS record changes: Editing A, MX, TXT or CNAME records directly at an independent external DNS provider normally does not require an EPP registry update, provided the registered nameservers remain unchanged.

However, CRA’s guidance refers broadly to DNS updates and does not separately define every external DNS management scenario.

Using an external DNS provider should not be treated as an exemption from the applicable registration eligibility requirements.

8. Should I Move My DNS to an External Provider Before 22 October?

This is optional and depends on your hosting and DNS requirements.

An external DNS provider can allow you to manage ordinary website and email DNS records without repeatedly changing your registered nameservers.

However, moving to an external provider does not remove your responsibility to comply with registry eligibility requirements.

Changing nameservers is itself a registry-level operation and may require verification after the new rules take effect.

Any DNS migration should be planned carefully to prevent disruption to your website and email.

9. Can I Transfer My Personal .qa Domain to a Company Later?

A change from an individual registrant to a company is a change to the registration information.

The new registrant must satisfy the applicable eligibility requirements and provide the necessary documentation.

Depending on the circumstances, this may include a qualifying trade licence, Commercial Registration, trademark registration or other official documents.

The revised policy also restricts the sale, rental and leasing of second-level .qa domains.

Customers should contact QHost before requesting a change of registrant.

10. Will New .qa Domain Registrations Still Be Instant?

CRA has clarified that accredited registrars may continue their existing registration processes while completing eligibility verification.

The new five-day Add Grace Period allows a registrar to register a domain and subsequently verify supporting documents.

If verification fails, the registrar can delete the qualifying registration within this period and obtain the applicable full registry fee refund.

However, individual registrars may apply their own review procedures.

An initial registration or activation does not guarantee final eligibility approval.

Customers should be prepared to provide supporting documents promptly.

11. Can Anyone Worldwide Register a New .qa Domain?

No longer under the previous unrestricted registration model.

Applicants must now satisfy the eligibility criteria established in the updated policies.

Relevant categories include commercial registrations, qualifying trademark holders, Qatar ID holders, residents and certain types of eligible organizations.

Applicants outside Qatar may qualify under certain categories, but unrestricted worldwide registration can no longer be assumed.

12. What Documents Are Required for a New .qa Registration?

The necessary documents depend on the applicant’s eligibility category.

Examples include:

Applicant categoryPossible supporting documents
Eligible individualQatar ID or residency permit
Commercial entityCommercial Registration or trade licence
Trademark holderQualifying trademark certificate
Sporting or charitable organizationRelevant official registration or authorization
Educational institutionApplicable institutional registration or official evidence
Government or military entityRelevant official authorization

The documentation must demonstrate eligibility for the selected category.

Registrars are required to retain the relevant documents throughout the domain’s registration validity period and make them available to CRA upon request.

13. How Do I Submit Eligibility Documents to QHost?

For preliminary document review, QHost has established the following email address:

qhost+docs@qhost.qa

Please use the subject format:

Documents for example.qa

Replace example.qa with the actual domain name.

The full technical submission process may involve additional validation steps. Customers should follow any instructions provided by QHost for their specific request.

If you have concerns about sharing sensitive documents through email, please contact QHost support before submitting them.

14. Do the New Eligibility Requirements Apply to .com.qa Domains?

.com.qa domains have historically been restricted to qualifying commercial applicants and trademark holders.

The updated registry platform continues to require an applicable eligibility category.

The approved types for .com.qa are Trade License and Trademark.

Existing .com.qa registrations are not automatically cancelled solely because the registry platform changes.

However, relevant documentation may be required for verification or registration modifications.

15. My Business Is Registered in Qatar. Do I Need to Submit My CR Again?

Not automatically.

If your existing registration is active and no additional verification has been requested, the platform migration does not itself mean you must submit a new registration application.

However, QHost may request a valid Commercial Registration or other documentation when required for compliance or to process changes.

Your registered company details should remain accurate and consistent with official records.

16. Will My Website and Email Be Affected During the Migration?

The registry migration begins at 12:00 AM Qatar Time on 22 October 2026.

During the maintenance window, registry transactions and affected QHost domain management services will be unavailable.

Existing websites, emails and DNS services are not inherently expected to stop working solely because the registry transaction platform is undergoing maintenance.

Normal operation still depends on the availability of your DNS, hosting and email infrastructure.

A separate issue arises if a domain is subsequently deleted because its registrant fails eligibility verification. In that case, associated services may be interrupted.

17. What Are the New Transfer Requirements?

The revised policy introduces:

  • A five-calendar-day automatic registrar transfer processing window.
  • A 60-day restriction generally applying after initial registration or a previous inter-registrar transfer.
  • A mandatory one-year renewal with incoming transfers.

A separate transfer fee is not permitted under the new policy, but the one-year renewal can be charged.

Customers should account for these changes when planning registrar transfers.

18. What Happens If My Domain Expires or Is Deleted?

The new platform introduces a 45-day registry auto-renew grace period.

For qualifying deleted domains, the revised lifecycle includes a 30-day Redemption Period followed by a one-day Pending Delete period.

Eligible domains may be restored during redemption through their sponsoring registrar, subject to the applicable rules and fees.

However, restoration is not guaranteed in every circumstance, and a domain in redemption may stop resolving.

Always renew important domains before their expiry dates.

19. Is the Five-Day Add Grace Period a Free Trial?

No.

The five-day Add Grace Period is a registry transaction mechanism that allows qualifying registrations to be deleted with a registry-level refund.

It is particularly important for eligibility verification under the new policies.

It does not automatically guarantee a customer cancellation right or a full refund from the registrar.

Customer refund arrangements remain subject to the applicable service terms.

20. Does Automatic Renewal Mean My Domain Is Guaranteed to Remain Active?

No.

Registry-level automatic renewal and customer-facing renewal payment are separate matters.

Domains remain subject to payment obligations, registrar terms and applicable registry policies.

In particular, automatically renewed registrations can still be subject to eligibility verification when modifications are requested.

If verification fails, CRA has instructed the registrar to delete the domain.

21. Do I Need to Take Any Action Right Now?

If your existing domain is active, your renewal payments are current and no registration modifications are planned, there is generally no immediate need to submit a new registration application solely because of the policy change.

However, we recommend:

  1. Keeping your renewal payments up to date.
  2. Reviewing whether you satisfy the applicable eligibility category.
  3. Preparing relevant supporting documents.
  4. Avoiding unnecessary registration changes if your eligibility is uncertain.
  5. Contacting QHost before requesting changes that may trigger verification.

22. Where Can I Read the Full Updated Policies?

The Qatar Domains Registry has confirmed that the revised policies will be published on 21 October 2026 and take effect on 22 October 2026.

Final Advice for Existing Domain Owners

Your existing .qa registration is not automatically lost because of the new rules. However, automatic renewal does not provide a permanent exemption from eligibility requirements.

The most important situation to understand is a requested registration modification. If the relevant verification fails, CRA requires the registrar to delete the domain, after which it enters redemption.

Before making changes, especially if you registered from outside Qatar under the previous open-registration policy, ensure that you understand your eligibility.
